International Country Music Day is Tuesday, September 17, and to celebrate, we’re sharing five of the best country music venues in California and Arizona. If live music and line dancing are calling your name, get ready to two-step your way into one of these country clubs, dance halls, or honkytonks.
1. The Maverick
One of the oldest country-western bars in Tucson, AZ, The Maverick is a honkytonk with a huge dance floor that gets packed Tuesdays through Saturdays. The country club offers fun events most evenings, including dance lessons where you can learn beginner moves, line dancing, and two-step.
2. Stoney’s Rockin Rodeo
Stoney’s is a popular Sacramento, CA, spot with a lineup that features country music, karaoke, and standard beverage and bar fare. Learn how to line dance at Stoney’s free line dancing lessons held every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night.
3. Bourbon Jacks Bar & Grill
Country singers and cover bands play live music every night of the week at Bourbon Jacks in Chandler, AZ. They also have a great happy hour from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and a reverse happy hour from 9 p.m. to close Sundays through Wednesdays. Their menu features all the country classics, including chicken fried steak, and with a name like Bourbon Jacks, you know they’re delivering in the drinks department: the bar boasts a selection of more than 200 types of whiskey!
4. Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace
Known as “The Country Music Capital of the West Coast,” Bakersfield, CA, is home to the eponymous Bakersfield sound: a tough, gritty take on mainstream country music that emerged in the 1950s. Country music outlaws like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Buck Owens were instrumental (pun intended) to the Bakersfield sound movement, and you can still catch the sound at a few venues around town. Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace is perhaps the biggest draw. Part museum, part restaurant, part country music venue, the Crystal Palace is a place where you can enjoy performances by country music’s hottest acts, dancing, and dinner with a healthy dose of history.
5. Buffalo Chip Saloon
The Buffalo Chip Saloon has been a fixture in Arizona’s Cave Creek community since 1951. The all-ages saloon has a jam-packed event calendar that includes free dance lessons and live music nearly every night of the week, plus an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Friday nights. They even offer bull riding lessons on Wednesday and Friday nights. Yeehaw!
